TOUR OVERVIEW:

The tour explores the province of Apokoronas, where villages preserve a special authentic color and life continues in a relaxed and traditional way.

The Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete. Tourism and agriculture are the major local industries, with much construction and quarrying to satisfy the demands of many foreigners eager to buy or rent properties in what used to be beautiful and traditional villages. Apokoronas was the location of much of the filming of the movie “Zorba the Greek”.  

The region offers spots of great natural beauty and interesting drives off the main highway. Stops will includethe archaeological site of Aptera, set on an impressive position with great vistas. With its highly fortunate geographical situation, the city-state was powerful from Minoan through Hellenistic times, when it gradually declined.We will explore the extensive ruins of the ancient city, before continuing to the village of Vamos with a walk in its older part to view traditional stone houses.

Our last stop will be at the picturesque village of Gavalochori. It is a very old village with an interesting history explained in the local Folklore Museum which we will visit.  

The village has many shops including two taverns, two cafes, a pastry shop with cafe bar, bakery, three grocery stores and a handicrafts shop

Time at leisure for shopping.

• This excursion will operate by coach and on foot.
• Note that all minors (those under 18) must be accompanied by an adult on shore excursions.
• The drive to Chania town is approximately 25 minutes each way.
• Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.  
• Rest room facilities in Gavalochori.
