ARKADI RETHYMNON

 

 

TOUR OVERVIEW:

Driving through scenery that changes constantly in one place harsh and barren in another wooden and gentle, you will arrive at the 5th century Arkadi monastery which stands at the top of a winding gorge, at the edge if a fertile region of fruit trees and cypresses. Largely rebuilt at the end of the 16th century, the most impressive of its buildings is the double-naved church with an ornate Venetian façade which dates back to 1587. The monastery provided a safe haven for its followers in times of religious persecution by local Muslims.

After the visit of the monastery you will be driven to Rethymnon a city which flourished under the Venetian rule during the 16th century.

Your walking tour will take you to the bustling harbor-front which serves as one great outdoor cafeteria, catering almost exclusively for tourists. A restored 13th century lighthouse stands on its breakwater.

The old town is characterized by a maze of narrow vine-canopied streets and its Venetian and Ottoman houses with wrought iron balconies.

Lunch will be offered in a traditional restaurant and the return back to ship is scheduled late in the afternoon.

Important Notes:

• This excursion will operate by coach and on foot.
• Note that all minors (those under 18) must be accompanied by an adult on shore excursions.
• The drive from Chania town to the monastery is approximately 45 minutes and from Rethymnon to Chania 1 hour
• Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, as the tour of the town is entirely on foot.
• Rest room facilities at the monastery and the restaurant.
