TOUR OVERVIEW:
The excursion from the town of Mytilene scenic drive heading to the village of Agiassos, lying some 29 kilometers northeast of Mytilini town on the pine and olive covered slopes of Mount Olympus. The landscape scenery is full of apple, chestnut, pear and cherry trees as well as varieties of other trees and shrubs. At the village, you will have the chance to stroll around the narrow stone streets and picturesque lanes and admire the traditional tile-roofed stone houses. For many years Agiassos village was known for its pottery and this tradition is carried on today. You will also visit the Church of Virgin Mary, which is the dominant feature of the village. The workshops with the looms and the old ladies wearing dresses in their traditional clothes is definitely something you have never seen before.For a moment you think that this place hasn`t been touched by modern civilization and that you are here by mistake.
The excursion from Agiasos to Papados village (to visit Vrana Old Olive Press) follows the shores of the bay for quite a distance, giving everyone the chance to enjoy the simple and pure beauty of the landscape. Papados is one of the most important villages on Lesvos and the hub of economic activity of Gera,an area with a long tradition in olive-oil production.
The Olive Press-Museum was one of the first steam-powered factories on Lesvos and in the Aegean.It was built in 1887 by Nikolaos Vranas-grandfather of the great poet Odysseas Elytis-in Papados. In its heyday, the olive press was a major industrial facility. Its external appearance and layout, in complete harmony with the monumental aesthetics of the time reflect-in all areas-the owner`s vision, to build a lasting enterprise.
Return journey to the pier.
