TOUR OVERVIEW:
Departing from the pier, you pass through the Old Aristocratic Neighbourhood of Mytilini, near the Venetian Castle, admiring the fine architecture of the old mansions. Your drive will continue on to Mandamados,
A chief village with traditional architecture,picturesque lanes,excellent farm and cattle products such as cheese,honey,olive oils as well as ceramics, Mandamados is renowned for its monastery dating back to the 17th century. According to the tradition the monastey houses the icon of Archangel Michael made up of mud and the blood of the monks slaughtered during the Turkish invation.
After your tour of the monastery, you will drive back toward Mytilene and the beautiful suburb Kioski, where you will visit the modern newly Arcaelogical Museum , which meets the international standards of myseology. Lesbian artefacts dating back to the Roman Age are aslo on display.The fawscinating collection of exhibits ranges from mosaics like the famous mosaic of ``Menandrou Residence`` wall paintings, sculptures, votive offering to sepulchral statues.
You will continue to the Castle wich will simply astonish you.This massive structureis said to be one of the largest fortifications in Europe nowadays.It was built during the rule of Justinian while various additional works took place during turkish Occupation.A number of underground arcades along with a 4000 m3 storing capacity cistern have survived into the present.
